Working Model of the Extrinsic Eye Muscles.

چکیده

IT is not easy for beginners to understand the actions of the extrinsic ocular muscles by simple reference to the geometry of their arrangement and attachments. A working model has been designed which has been found useful for demonstrating these actions, both singly and in groups. The requirements of a satisfactory model are that it should be large enough for movements to be easily seen and that these movements should be reasonably full and accurate. For construction of the globe, the 3-in. diameter hardwood ball sold for the game of shinty was found to be of suitable size and quality. The hardwood base for the model was then made 71 in. long to represent the correct proportion of globe to orbital floor. Full movement of the ball was assured by using a thrust bearing consisting of a 2-in. diameter shallow brass cup and nylon washer, with a brass flange soldered to the inner aspect of the cup to prevent dislocation of the globe which otherwise occurs. The bearing was fixed to a rod bent through 900 and attached to the back of the upper surface of the base. This rod was also used to bear a ring at its posterior end for the attachment of the rubber bands representing the rectus muscles (Figs 1 and 2).

COORDINATION OF INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC TONGUE MUSCLES DURING SPONTANEOUS BREATHING IN THE RAT. Bailey EF and Fregosi RF

The muscular-hydrostat model of tongue function proposes a constant interaction of extrinsic (external bony attachment, insertion into base of tongue) and intrinsic (origin and insertion within the tongue) tongue muscles in all tongue movements (22). Yet, research that examines the respiratory-related effects of tongue function in mammals continues to focus almost exclusively on the respiratory...
